Jefferson Elementary's new certification: What it means for students

Coldwater’s Jefferson Elementary School has achieved Level 1 certification in Marzano High Reliability Schools, according to an announcement.

The certification indicates the school has established a “Safe, Supportive and Collaborative Culture,” a foundational element for subsequent levels. Without such a culture, student achievement may be compromised, according to the announcement.

The High Reliability Schools program, developed by Marzano Resources, aims to transform schools into organizations that proactively ensure student success. The program employs a research-based five-level hierarchy, along with leading and lagging indicators, to help educators assess, monitor and confirm their schools’ effectiveness.

This framework, based on 50 years of educational research, outlines five progressive performance levels a school must master to become a High Reliability School, where all students learn the content and skills needed for success in college, careers and beyond.

“As you move through the levels, it represents a complete transformation in how schools are run,” Robert J. Marzano, CEO of Marzano Resources, said in the announcement.

To progress through each level, schools must collect data and validate their performance. Certification is determined by Marzano Resources analysts in cooperation with school data teams.

By using the High Reliability Schools framework and indicators, schools can drive sustained, positive and significant impacts on student achievement by synthesizing multiple complex initiatives into one harmonious system, according to the announcement.

Marzano Resources, founded on Robert J. Marzano’s 50 years of education research, supports teachers and administrators through customizable on-site professional development, educator events, virtual coaching, books, videos and online courses. The organization’s associates and authors are thought leaders in the field of education and provide research-backed guidance for all major areas of schooling, including curriculum development, instruction, assessment, student engagement and personalized competency-based education.
