The Milwaukee Health Department has determined that Nehring’s Sendik’s on Downer Avenue can reopen after its closure earlier in the week.
The Health Department announced the clearance May 7 after an inspection earlier in the day, according to a statement.
The department had issued a closure order for the east side grocery store on May 5 because of rodent activity in the basement storage and areas where customers were present.
“During today’s reinspection, MHD confirmed that all pest-related violations have been addressed,” Health Department spokesperson Caroline Reinwald said in a statement. “Affected areas have been cleaned and sanitized, and no new pest activity was observed.”
The department issued another order that allows it to continue monitoring the store for compliance, she said, adding that Sendik’s has been cooperative throughout the process.
In a statement, store owners John and Anne Nehring said they “worked closely with the Health Department and local partners to quickly and thoroughly resolve the issue identified this week.”
“Our historic building presents unique challenges, especially during ongoing city water and sewer work. However, the quality and safety of our food was never in question. We’ve proudly served this community for 12 years, and our dedicated team remains committed to offering the best products, service, and experience in Milwaukee.”
The Nehrings purchased the store from Tony Sendik in 2013.
