Wisconsin broadcaster Matt Lepay praises viral fall camp interception

Hammond Russell IV is making quite the first impression for the Wisconsin Badgers.

The veteran defensive lineman produced one of the more impressive plays of the Badgers’ fall camp, and it was good enough to catch the attention of longtime Wisconsin broadcaster Matt Lepay.

During a red-zone period, quarterback Colton Joseph appeared to have a receiver open for what could have been a touchdown. Russell, however, got his right hand up at just the right moment, deflecting the pass into the air. The defensive lineman then tracked down the tipped ball for an interception before taking off down the sideline, with several of his defensive teammates racing alongside him to celebrate what Wisconsin jokingly dubbed a touchdown.

The play prompted Lepay to share Wisconsin’s video on social media, offering some particularly high praise for Russell.

This is quite the endorsement from someone who has spent decades around Wisconsin football.

Russell, a transfer from West Virginia, has already been working with the Badgers’ top defensive line group during fall camp. His combination of size, experience, and versatility will make him an important piece of Wisconsin’s defense this season.
