Volunteers urged to help mussels stranded along riverbeds after flooding

A nonprofit organization is encouraging volunteers to help stranded mussels following severe flooding in parts of Outagamie and Waupaca counties.

Rising water levels carried mussels away from their habitats, the River Alliance of Wisconsin said in a Facebook post April 22. So, it is asking people to rescue those mussels by gently tossing them back into the river.

Mussels are in need of rescuing along the Little Wolf, Embarrass, Waupaca and Pigeon rivers, and other low-laying areas downstream of dams that had high water levels. The Alliance encourages volunteers to be wear grippy shoes that might get muddy.
