City workers on Tuesday, Aug. 4, began to take down the Madison encampment raised as a lingering protest in the wake of the fatal police shooting of Corey Ruiz.
Dylan Brogan, spokesman for Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, said streets workers came in and began clearing the encampment around 5 a.m. after using a loudspeaker to notify people gathered there about the intention to remove it.
Protestors responded by throwing rocks at the workers and lighting fires in the street, Brogan said.
“There have been multiple days of letting folks know this was unsafe, unsustainable,” he said. “They needed to get out of the intersection.”
The goal was to remove the memorial items from the street peacefully and keep them to be set up again to memorialize Ruiz. But the reaction from people at the encampment prompted a different response, requiring police to come to the scene.
