Caleb Williams Watch: How Bears QB performed on Day 5 of training camp

The Chicago Bears were back at training camp on Monday for their fifth practice of the summer, and there was plenty to break down from Day 5, including the performance of quarterback Caleb Williams.

Williams is entering his third season following a breakout sophomore campaign where he set a franchise single-season passing record, led an NFL record seven fourth quarter comebacks (including the postseason) while leading Chicago to an 11-6 record, NFC North title and playoff win. That was all in one season with head coach Ben Johnson. Now, all eyes are on Williams this summer as he continues to develop under Johnson and make a huge leap in Year 3.

We’re taking a look at the good, the bad and the noteworthy with Williams from the fifth practice of Bears training camp:

The Good

Following a rough showing on Saturday in the rainy conditions, Williams bounced back with a strong day in the first day of pads, where he shined in one-on-one situations. According to Bear Report “Caleb Williams had some nice completions to Colston Loveland and Luther Burden which led to Rome Odunze and Cole Kmet celebrating with both players.”

There was one throw that Williams completed to wide receiver Luther Burden III, who made a contested catch over cornerback Tyrique Stevenson for a long completion, according to CHGO. Stevenson gave the ultimate compliment to Williams after practice. “Perfect throw beats perfect coverage every time.” Williams also connected with receiver Kalif Raymond, who beat cornerback Jaylon Johnson “with a double move and hauled in a long touchdown pass from Williams.”

The Bad

Unlike Saturday’s sloppy session, there wasn’t really anything bad from Williams in a bounce-back performance during Monday’s practice.

The Noteworthy

Before Monday’s padded practice, head coach Ben Johnson issued a challenge for the offense to rebound following what was a rough showing on Saturday in rainy conditions.

“We’ve been up and down for a little bit,” said Johnson. “We started off okay and then that last practice wasn’t very good from an offensive perspective. We had way too many mistakes, a couple of delay-of-game penalties mixed in there, false starts, the little things like that started to accumulate. I think that’s probably normal with the volume continuing to increase and yet it’s not OK for us. We’re going to nip that in the bud and hopefully we’ll get a little bit better in that regard, but I was happy with the first four days.”

According to Bear Report, the offense did just that. “There was only one false start by the offense in all three team periods, and the operation was much smoother in the run game and the pass game.”
