There’s no convoluted math left to solve: The Milwaukee Brewers have clinched their postseason berth.
By virtue of the New York Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers on Sept. 13, the Brewers announced they have officially clinched a spot in the playoffs before taking on the St. Louis Cardinals at American Family Field.
The Brewers may have already mathematically been in the playoffs by virtue of complicated tiebreaker processes, though the league did not announce it as such. The Mets’ loss made it official that, for the seventh time in eight seasons, the Brewers will be playing playoff baseball.
They got some help from an old friend to punch the ticket, too. It was former Brewers first baseman Rowdy Tellez who delivered the tying double in the top of the eighth against Mets closer Edwin Diaz, who would then allow Texas to take the lead in the ninth.
Milwaukee also dropped its magic number to clinch the National League Central Division to nine earlier in the day with the Cubs losing to the Rays.
