Cartagena, 24, of Marinette, went missing Feb. 4 near Red Arrow Park in Marinette. Marinette Police Chief Jon LaCombe said Feb. 12 that Cartagena died near the park and her body was moved. He said her mother’s last contact with Cartagena was during a phone call at 7:19 p.m. Feb. 4 when she was heard saying, “Please don’t shoot me.”

Chilcote was arrested Feb. 5 in Wright County, Minnesota, and was charged with fleeing a peace officer and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, according to court records.

According to a criminal complaint, Chilcote told police he shot Cartagena in the head during an argument. He said he was trying to scare Cartagena with the gun when it went off and confirmed he moved her body from the Red Arrow Park parking lot, the complaint said.

Chilcote is scheduled to have an omnibus hearing in his Minnesota case May 1. During an omnibus hearing, the court hears pretrial motions including probable cause, evidentiary issues, discovery, constitutional or procedural issues and the admissibility of certain evidence.
