SHEBOYGAN – A person and a dog were found dead early Monday, May 11, after a house fire on the city’s north side, the Sheboygan Fire Department said.
Fire reported just after midnight on Pershing Avenue
Dispatchers received a report of a possible structure fire at 12:03 a.m. on Pershing Avenue after a passerby saw smoke and heard smoke alarms, the department said. A full department response was sent.
First-arriving crews found moderate smoke coming from the eaves and the chimney area. Firefighters forced entry and encountered heavy smoke inside, banked down to the floor.
Crews advanced hose lines and found moderate fire conditions in the kitchen and stairway area, the department said. The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished within minutes.
Resident and dog found dead during searches
Firefighters found one resident dead during a search of the home, officials said. During a secondary search, crews also found a dog that had died.
Crews encountered multiple obstacles inside and outside the home while operating at the scene, the department said. The incident was resolved at 4:41 a.m. The cause remains under investigation.
Fire department urges working smoke alarms on every level
The department urged residents to install smoke alarms on every level of their homes, test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
