With summer sun comes traffic delays and roadwork signs.
If you’re headed to Appleton, you’ll see plenty of construction on Interstate 41, while some ramps off Interstate 41 closer to Appleton will remain closed until fall. Some other construction projects will continue or start up over the summer in the Green Bay area.
Here are five roadwork projects to keep an eye on in the Green Bay area for the next few months.
Southern Bridge route
Construction of the Southern Bridge route connects Interstate 43 to Interstate 41 with a new bridge over the Fox River and new interchange with I-41. The project creates a four-lane road from Packerland Drive and Scheuring Road on the west side to Monroe Road/County GV on the east side.
The first phase of construction is underway to create a roundabout at Packerland Drive and Scheuring Road. Work on the roundabout should wrap up in November, said Chris Hardy, Brown County Highway Commissioner.
Packerland Drive will close in late summer for six weeks for construction of Packerland Drive south to new interchanges with Williams Grant Drive and Scheuring Road. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2030.
More information can be found on the county Highway Department’s South Bridge website.
Lineville Road construction continues
Expansion of Lineville Road on the Howard-Suamico border will continue over the summer. Two lanes will get added to the busy thoroughfare. The first two phases of the expansion between Belmont Road and Velp Avenue wrapped up in 2024.
Work resumed in March between Velp Avenue and Cornell Road. The roundabout at Velp was scheduled to be finished around the end of May but it was still closed as of June 3.
Once the roundabout reopens, work will continue on Lineville Road between Velp and Cornell. That stretch will be closed until early July. Drivers can take a detour at Cornell Road to Woodale Avenue and then to Velp Avenue. A roundabout will then be built at the Cornell and Lineville intersection.
Lineville Road will be closed from Brookfield Avenue to the Cornell Road/Lineville intersection starting in July.
Construction is estimated to finish in November. More information and weekly updates can be found at jt-engineering.com/projects/cth-m-lineville/.
Mid Valley Drive roundabout
Construction of a new roundabout at Mid Valley Drive and Grant Street in Lawrence continues this summer. The two-way stops at the intersection will be converted to a roundabout to reduce crashes from cars turning left onto County EE from Mid Valley Drive.
Construction started May 12 and is expected to wrap up by the end of August.
Packerland Drive and Trojan Drive
Drivers will get a roundabout at the intersection of Packerland Drive and Trojan Drive just north of Southwest High School. Traffic in the area was previously deemed a safety issue and the roundabout is expected to reduce the number of crashes near the Packerland Drive and West Mason Street intersection. The roadwork comes after the county installed concrete barrier walls in early 2023 to restrict traffic going in and out of the frontage road parallel to Mason Street.
The Packerland and Trojan Drive roundabout will make it safer for cars leaving Southwest High. The project was delayed because it took time to get approval to use the land that’s held in federal trust, Hardy said.
Northbound Packerland north of Southwest High will close June 9 and one lane will be open on southbound Packerland Drive. Hardy expects the roundabout to wrap up in the middle of August before school starts.
“We’re trying to get it done with minimal impact to the school because it’s such a tight right of way. We don’t have a lot of room to maintain much traffic,” Hardy said.
There will be a one-day closure of Packerland Drive between West Mason Street and West Point Road from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. June 11. The closure is so a storm sewer can be installed, done in conjunction with the roundabout work.
County Z
County Z will be closed from Outagamie Road to County D in the town of Holland until July or early August for repaving, Hardy said. The intersection at County Z and County D is currently closed but will open back up in a couple weeks.
Construction of County Z should be wrapped up around early August. Outagamie County is also doing construction on its end of County Z.
