The Green Bay Packers opened their third practice of training camp without two starters along the offensive line and finished with the defense winning the day for the second consecutive practice. Matt LaFleur’s team didn’t have Aaron Banks or Elgton Jenkins, who both have injured backs. But kicker Brandon McManus had a big day kicking the football on his birthday.
Recapping Day 3 of Packers training camp:
Injury updates
Two new injuries to monitor: Left guard Aaron Banks has a new back injury and is considered day to day, while rookie receiver Savion Williams has a concussion. Both players missed practice on Friday. Linebacker Quay Walker (ankle) and offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins (back) have yet to return to practice.
Big things to know
On his 34th birthday, kicker Brandon McManus made all nine of his kicks, including three field goals of 50 or more yards. The veteran is now a perfect 15-for-15 to start training camp. What a difference a year makes.
Among those attending practice on Friday were Marquette basketball coach Shaka Smart and former Packers receiver Jordy Nelson.
Without Aaron Banks and Elgton Jenkins, the Packers did plenty of mixing and matching along the offensive line. Sean Rhyan and Jacob Monk split time at center and guard, Jordan Morgan worked at both left guard and left tackle, and Travis Glover got first-team reps at guard. There’s a lot to figure out up front for the Packers, and having two injured starters doesn’t help.
Carrington Valentine intercepted a pass for the second consecutive day. Javon Bullard forced a fumble and created a turnover in a team period. Valentine also broke up a pass in an 11-on-11 period.
Jordan Love and Dontayvion Wicks connected for a long touchdown pass. Wicks is having a strong start to camp.
First-round pick Matthew Golden got some opportunities to do pre-snap motion, including a couple of jet sweep touches. His speed pre-snap is going to be something the Packers will want to use to get him easy touches and free releases off the line of scrimmage.
