MANITOWOC – A 27-year-old man, identified by police as a local transient, was arrested Tuesday after police say a domestic dispute at a Manitowoc hotel escalated into a suspected strangulation and threats to kill the victim.
According to a Manitowoc Police Department report, officers were dispatched about 5:28 p.m. March 17 to the Calumet Avenue hotel after a sheriff’s office lieutenant requested assistance. The victim told police the incident began around 6 p.m. March 16 in a hotel room when an argument turned physical.
The victim reported the suspect grabbed them from the front and then placed them in a choke hold from behind using a forearm, making it difficult to breathe for several seconds and causing pain.
The victim also reported the suspect threatened to “put a bullet” in their head and made additional threats to kill the victim and then himself, and said he had “nothing to lose.”
Police located the suspect later March 17 in a vehicle at a Park and Ride in the 7700 block of County Road CR and took him into custody during a high-risk traffic stop with assistance from the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office, the report said. Officers said a handgun and an AR-15-style rifle were found during a search of the vehicle.
The suspect was booked into Manitowoc County Jail on suspected charges of strangulation and suffocation, battery and disorderly conduct, all domestic violence-related, and a 72-hour no-contact order was issued, police said.
