Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich spent almost 15 minutes answering questions during his first press conference of training camp on Wednesday.
Stenavich had answers on Jager Burton, Jacob Monk, Anthony Belton, MarShawn Lloyd and more.
A few notes from Stenavich on players competing at training camp:
On early impressions of rookie Jager Burton: “He’s got really good athleticism. He’s got strength. He’s an intelligent player and I like his playstyle, too. He’s got the right mindset for offensive line play, so I’m excited about what he can be for us. We’re going to work him at multiple spots just to see where he fits, and we’ve got a lot of competition in that room to see what our best five are, so I’m hopeful he’ll get out there and keep impressing us.”
— As the Packers do, Burton is being cross-trained at multiple positions so he’s ready in case of an injury at guard or center. He missed two days of camp with a hamstring injury but is back now.
On Jacob Monk: “I love Monk’s play style. Like his mindset, he has the right mindset. He tries to get after people, he plays the game the right way. So I’ve been been happy with how he’s played so far in camp.” Stenavich confirmed Monk is getting reps at guard and center during camp.
— The Packers loved the way Monk played in the regular season finale in Minnesota last year. It appears he’s building on the momentum and becoming a top interior backup.
On Anthony Belton in Year 2, and playing both guard and tackle: “He’s more comfortable. His head’s not swimming as far as like assignments and things like that, so he can work on his fundamentals. We’re still going to work him at guard and tackle just to make sure he’s comfortable at both of those spots because I think he has the versatility to be a guy at either position in case, you know, whatever happens down the road. So I think that’s the biggest thing, is just making sure he’s ready to go at both positions and obviously competing for a starting job at both of those positions.”
— The notable thing here is Belton still cross-training at guard and tackle despite being the front runner to start at right guard. While Belton looked far better at guard, and it might benefit him to focus on just one spot during his second training camp, the Packers probably need him ready in case he has to kick out to tackle.
On confidence in MarShawn Lloyd: “Every day he’s out there and doing it, I have a little bit more. You know, it’s just one of those things, how his career’s gone so far, that I just want to take it one day at a time with him. He’s doing a great job. He’s competing. So I’m very optimistic and hopeful that it works out and we’re good. I think this preseason’s going to be a huge telling point of what we can do with him this year…He needs to carry the ball because he hasn’t done it much in game situations the last two years. So I think that’s going to be important.”
— Expect to see plenty of Lloyd in the preseason as he works up to being ready for the start of the regular season. He got through his first week of camp, including two padded practices, without an issue. Lloyd is checking boxes, but more await.
Other notes: Stenavich said tight end Drake Dabney is one of the most improved players during the first few days of camp…the backup left tackle spot is one the Packers are trying to figure out during training camp…the Packers believe Matthew Golden’s “route details” are better, and he’s “blocking with authority” in the run game during camp…Stenavich compared Skyy Moore to Tyler Ervin, calling him a “strong, fast runner” in a versatile role.
