The second and final week of nonconference play in the WIAA high school football season featured several surprises, led by a blowout loss for our No. 1 team. Here is how our top 10 area teams entering the week performed in Week 2.
1. Slinger (1-1)
One of the most shocking results of the week was the Slinger Owls falling flat in Lake Geneva to a Badger team it won two close games against during a 14-0 run to the WIAA Division 2 state title in 2024. Friday’s rematch was anything but close, as the Badgers ran away with it while scoring on all but two possessions, winning 56-17. Next: vs. Hartford Union, Sept. 5.
2. Arrowhead (2-0)
Neenah nearly had another heartbreaking win over an area program again this week, taking over late on a high snap over the head of Arrowhead’s punter to set up the Rockets at the Warhawks 38. Arrowhead’s Jack Tarkowski secured a 16-13 win over the Rockets, however, with a game-sealing interception in the final moments at home. Next: vs. Waukesha West, Sept. 5.
3. Muskego (1-1)
The Warriors bounced back from the timing controversy that cost them against Neenah last week with a decisive win in their home opener over Oak Creek, 41-17. Next: at Pewaukee, Sept. 5.
4. Franklin (2-0)
The Sabers joined Kenosha Bradford as the only two 2-0 teams in the Southeast Conference with a 42-14 win over Brookfield Central. Next: vs. Racine Case, Sept. 5.
5. Homestead (2-0)
The Highlanders doubled up Kettle Moraine on the road, winning 56-28. The Highlanders have put up 99 points while surrendering just 43 to their opponents through two weeks. Next: vs. Nicolet, Sept. 5.
6. Racine Case (1-1)
Our lone area top 10 battle of the week went to No. 9 Sussex Hamilton, as Jacob Osmanski threw for one score and rushed for another to lead the Chargers over Racine Case, 20-12. Next: at Franklin, Sept. 5.
7. Oconomowoc (2-0)
The Raccoons made it a 2-0 start with a 13-7 road win over Verona to drop the Wildcats to 0-2. Next: vs. Kettle Moraine, Sept. 5.
8. Catholic Memorial (1-1)
The Crusaders got back on track at home against Sun Prairie West on Aug. 28, beating the Wolves 30-7 on the strength of a 21-point second quarter. Next: at Waukesha North, Sept. 5.
9. Sussex Hamilton (2-0)
KJ Lally was the late hero for Sussex Hamilton, hauling in a game-winning interception in the final minute to stall Racine Case’s final comeback attempt in front of its home crowd. Next: at Brookfield East, Sept. 5.
10. Mukwonago (1-1)
Mukwonago got a massive bounceback performance after a lackluster home opener in Week 1, beating Sun Prairie East also at home, 40-3. Next: vs. Menomonee Falls, Sept. 5.
