Some planned changes to Interstate 94 traffic flow in Milwaukee will begin Monday, Aug. 17.
A new long-term lane closure for an eastbound lane between 70th Street and General Mitchell Boulevard will start that morning. The stretch of I-94 in the area will shrink to two lanes.
The long-term closures do not come with specific end dates. Construction staging maps suggest the latest lanes to close could reopen by 2028.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is reconstructing the eastbound I-94 lanes as part of the I-94 East-West Project. New department reports suggest the full East-West project could take an extra two years to complete than originally planned, pushing the end date to late 2035.
For the latest lane closures, the DOT recommends local drivers north of I-94 take Wisconsin Avenue and Blue Mound Road to avoid the lane squeeze. For regional drivers, officials suggests using WIS-100 between I-41 and I-43 or I-894 to the south.
All work is weather dependent and subject to change and alterations.
Future lane, ramp closures on I-94 and I-794 this summer
There are three other closures set for the East-West Project this summer.
The DOT lists each future closure to begin in “late summer 2026” and re-opening dates for “late 2026,” but no exact dates are given.
