Frank Harwood was a 2001 graduate of Neenah High School, and was a member of the football team in 2000. He was the Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief and had served for the agency for 17 years.

On June 29, firefighters responded to a call about a fire on the east side of Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. When firefighters arrived, suspect Wess Roley shot the firefighters, resulting in a police shootout.

Roley was later found dead; authorities believe his death was a suicide.

Harwood was killed alongside Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison. A third firefighter, Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Dave Tysdal, is recovering after two surgeries.

Harwood, 42, was married with two children.

Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Christopher Way spoke about Harwood in a news conference following the shooting. “He did an amazing job,” Way said. “This loss is felt by so many.”

A fundraiser for the Harwood family was created by Kootenai County Fire & Rescue , which can be found on the department’s Facebook page.
