Not many teams have had the Oklahoma City Thunder’s number this season.
But the San Antonio Spurs continue to.
The Western Conference finals began this week with the second-seeded Spurs giving the top-seeded Thunder their first loss of the playoffs in Game 1 of their best-of-seven series. The Thunder had been 8-0 in the playoffs with two sweeps before they fell in double overtime, 122-115, to the Spurs at Paycom Center.
The playoff Game 1 win for the Spurs was their fifth in six games over the reigning NBA champions this season.
And on the night that Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was awarded with his second straight MVP, it was Spurs young phenom Victor Wembanyama who put up an MVP performance, scoring a game-high 41 points and collecting 24 rebounds. He made 14 of 25 shots, including one huge game-tying three-pointer from the logo late in the first overtime.
Besides being comfortable against the Thunder, the Spurs have no fear on the road. They have won five of their six road playoff games across three series. If they do it again, they’ll take a 2-0 series lead back home.
The Thunder (-7.5-point favorites in Game 2), who had been off for a week between the end of the second round and the start of the West finals, will now look to respond and bounce back for the first time in the playoffs.
Game 2 tips off at 7:30 p.m. May 20.
