A man was injured after he became trapped in industrial machinery in New Berlin on Aug. 14, according to a news release from the New Berlin Fire Department.

When fire crews arrived at 7:51 a.m., the department said a man’s hand was stuck in a machine and requested additional specialized medical and technical rescue resources.

The New Berlin Fire Department medical director, a physician from Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, responded to the scene and assisted with advanced medical care during the extrication. A second physician and medical director from Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin also responded to provide additional medical support.

The City of Waukesha Fire Department Special Services Team was requested to provide specialized equipment and personnel for the extrication.

Due to the nature of the man’s injuries and anticipated medical needs, Med 51 from the Wauwatosa Fire Department was requested to the scene. The fire department said Med 51 is one of the closest Milwaukee County paramedic units equipped with blood administration capabilities.

Firefighters, physicians, law enforcement personnel, technical rescue specialists and Denali’s maintenance staff worked together to disassemble and manipulate the industrial equipment while providing continuous medical care to the man.

The man was extricated from the machinery at around 9:21 a.m. and transported to an area hospital in stable but serious condition.

Officials said no additional information regarding the man’s identity or condition would be immediately released.

“This incident demonstrates the importance of strong regional partnerships and the ability to rapidly bring specialized technical and medical resources together during complex emergencies. The successful extrication was the result of exceptional teamwork among responding agencies, medical personnel, and the maintenance staff of the business,” the fire department said in the news release.
