Progress on the construction of an apartment complex in downtown Green Bay will close neighboring North Washington Street from Cherry to Pine streets for several days starting Sept. 22, according to a news release from the city’s Department of Public Works.
The roughly 360-foot section of North Washington Street is far from being the most used road in the city, however, it provides several on-street parking spots that will become temporarily unavailable, and is home to a handful of businesses.
Here’s what to know.
Why is part of North Washington Street closing?
Nova Green Bay, the luxury apartment building in question, will hook its private utilities to existing city utilities, which continues the work to get the development toward an anticipated completion by early fall 2026, the Green Bay Press-Gazette previously reported.
The $55 million development has been in construction since December 2024, replacing a downtown parking lot and the Packers Heritage Trail Plaza.
What part of North Washington Street will close?
North Washington Street will close between Pine and Cherry streets in front of several bars and stores, including Black Saddle Tavern & Oasis, Ned Kelly’s Pub, and Lion’s Mouth Bookstore.
Access to the neighboring sidewalks will not be affected, the city’s public works supervisor Elizabeth Nadolski Spears told the Press-Gazette.
How long will North Washington Street be closed?
The closure will span the entire workweek from 6 a.m. Sept. 22 to 5 p.m. Sept. 26, according to Nadolski Spears.
The department did not announce in its news release specific times when the closure will begin and end. Nadolski Spears told the Press-Gazette that its initial decision not announce specific times was because “work is weather-dependent, and these times are only approximations …”
Will there be a detour?
There will be no detour provided by the department, according to its news release. The department suggested that those potentially impacted should find alternate routes.
