MANITOWOC – The Walk to End Alzheimer’s returns to Manitowoc on Sept. 26 at the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA, 205 Maritime Drive.
The event raises money and awareness for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. It is part of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which the organization says is the world’s largest event dedicated to the disease.
When and where is the Manitowoc walk?
The walk will be Sept. 26 at the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA, 205 Maritime Drive, Manitowoc.
Registration and event activities open at 8:30 a.m. The opening ceremony begins at 9:40 a.m., followed by the walk at 10 a.m.
Why organizers say the event matters
More than 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Nearly 13 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
In Wisconsin, more than 111,000 people 65 and older are living with the disease, and 206,000 caregivers support people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, according to the association.
Kris Dykstra, chair of the Walk Planning Committee, said in a news release: “This is a crucial moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. With new treatments and effective lifestyle habits that support brain health, there is genuine hope.”
What happens during the walk?
Participants will take part in the Promise Garden ceremony, a symbolic part of the event that honors people affected by Alzheimer’s.
Walkers carry flowers in different colors to represent their personal connection to the disease.
