Elijah Gray dismissed from Wisconsin men's basketball due to 'events preceding his enrollment'

Wisconsin forward Elijah Gray has been dismissed from the men’s basketball program, the team announced in an Oct. 28 press release.

The Temple transfer’s departure from Greg Gard’s program is “related to events preceding his enrollment at UW-Madison,” according to the team statement.

“Privacy laws limit the university’s ability to share more at this time,” the Oct. 28 release said.

The 6-foot-9 forward had not played a game yet in a Wisconsin uniform. Gray did not travel with the team to its Oct. 24 exhibition against Oklahoma “due to personal reasons,” a team spokesman said in a text message to the Journal Sentinel. He was present at UW’s annual Red-White Scrimmage on Oct. 19, but he did not participate due to what a team spokesman described at the time as an illness. Gray did participate in interviews at UW’s local media day on Oct. 13.

The Badgers announced his transfer portal arrival in July. He previously played two seasons at Fordham and one season at Temple. The Charlotte native averaged 9.0 points and 3.8 rebounds in 25 games for Temple last season. He was one of five additions to the UW program via the transfer portal in the offseason.

Gray’s departure is unlikely to have a major impact on Wisconsin’s frontcourt rotation. Returning starter Nolan Winter and West Coast Conference freshman of the year Austin Rapp started for the Badgers in their exhibition against Oklahoma. Freshmen Aleksas Bieliauskas and Will Garlock, who both have received significant praise from UW coaches ahead of the season, came off the bench.
