OSHKOSH – The mall is losing another of its cornerstone stores.
The Eddie Bauer outlet at the Shops at Oshkosh is shuttering, as the outdoor apparel retailer is staging a store closing sale after its operator, Eddie Bauer LLC, filed for bankruptcy last month.
Retail associates said there is no official closing date, with the branch expected to remain open based on current inventory.
A visit to the 3001 S. Washburn location March 5 showed closing signs littered all over the store amid an ongoing 40%-60% storewide sale.
Eddie Bauer is set to close around 180 stores across the US and Canada.
The Oshkosh outlet is one of about 180 Eddie Bauer stores expected to be shuttered, including the locations in Appleton, Madison, Eau Claire, Wauwatosa, Pleasant Prairie, Baraboo and Johnson Creek.
According to Reuters reporting, a recent court filing shows that Eddie Bauer is open to offers to purchase its assets, although the company canceled a recent bankruptcy auction for those retail stores.
Eddie Bauer joins a laundry list of stores to vacate the once popular Shops at Oshkosh, which also saw the departure of Hanes and Adidas in late 2024.
The Children’s Place, Brooks Brothers, Justice, Johnny Rockets, Van Heusen, Bass Factory Outlet, Nautica and CorningWare all left during the pandemic, which eventually resulted in Wilmington Trust filing a foreclosure lawsuit against previous owners BFO Factory Shoppes LLC.
According to the suit, BFO Factory Shoppes LLC did not make a single mortgage payment in four months on the $54.7 million load it used to finance the mall and other properties.
The mall was eventually sold to Woodmont Company in 2021 before Woodman’s Food Markets acquired the entire 37-acre property for $12 million three years later.
At the time, mall management Mid-America Real Estate said it was extending store leases and hoping to attract new tenants, adding that Woodman’s had no plans on redeveloping the lot into a supermarket.
The mall boasts fewer than 30 operating tenants and close to 20 vacant storefronts.
