Appleton will add second pet waste station on College Avenue

Downtown Appleton will get a second pet waste station to make it easier for pet owners to do their part in cleaning up after their pets.

The new pet waste station will be installed in a planter on the south side of the 200 block of East College Avenue. It will complement an existing pet waste station located in a planter near Houdini Plaza.

Appleton Downtown Inc. will supply and maintain the waste station. The Common Council approved a permanent street occupancy permit for the unit on June 17.

Jennifer Stephany, ADI’s executive director, said the need for a second pet waste station stems from additional residents and visitors in the central business district.

“More residents, more dogs, more people traveling with their pets; we want to make sure that we’re implementing some of the amenities that are needed to make them feel at home,” Stephany said.

ADI has added staff to help with downtown maintenance. Stephany said the duties include “emptying the units, keeping them full of little bags and making sure they are clean and not smelly.”

According to a memorandum of understanding between ADI and the city, ADI staff will refill the bags and empty the waste station “not less than four days of each week throughout the year.”

“A pet-friendly downtown will better serve the needs of residents, boost visitor traffic to our central business district and ensure that pet-loving people throughout the Fox Cities know their entire family is welcome in downtown Appleton,” the memorandum says.
