After rising for two weeks, gas prices are settling in Wisconsin

The average price of gas in Milwaukee and across Wisconsin has finally settled down and, on Thursday, May 7, didn’t increase for the first time in about two weeks.

Previous issues with an Indiana oil refinery have been resolved, helping to ease a major surge in Great Lakes region gas prices.

GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said Tuesday, May 5 that all refineries in the region were getting “back up to speed,” and gas prices in Wisconsin appear to be responding.

The average gas price in Wisconsin was $4.40 a gallon on Thursday, May 7, down a cent from $4.41 on Wednesday, May 6, according to AAA.

The tally for the most recent gas price spike: a 74-cent increase in 15 days. On Wednesday, April 22, Wisconsin’s average price for a gallon of gas was $3.67.

Gas prices could continue to fall from $4.40 a gallon, but getting below $3 a gallon will require a resolution in the Strait of Hormuz, experts told the Journal Sentinel.

Adams County in central Wisconsin was the only place in the state where the price for a gallon of gas was still above the national average of $4.56. The average price in Adams County was $4.60 a gallon on Thursday.

Has Wisconsin set any gas price records in 2026?

Wisconsin hit a new all-time record for diesel gas prices on Tuesday, May 5. According to AAA, the average diesel price hit $5.71 a gallon that day, surpassing the previous record of $5.67 the day before and the former record of $5.52 set June 22, 2025.

Diesel remains more expensive than the 2022 record: AAA reported the average gallon of diesel cost $5.68 on Thursday.

The record for regular unleaded gas in Wisconsin remains $4.92, set June 12, 2022.
