A South Milwaukee student was struck by a car while riding his bicycle home after school let out on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
A letter sent by the South Milwaukee School District to parents shortly after the incident said the middle school student “darted across 15th Avenue outside of the crosswalk and was hit by a car.”
The student was released to his family after a medical assessment determined his injuries were minor, the district said. No further information was released.
South Milwaukee Police Chief Bill Jessup confirmed the child is fine and was struck while riding his bicycle. He said the driver remained at the scene and was not at fault.
In the letter, the school district encouraged parents to speak with their children “about safe ways to walk/bike to and from school” and to “encourage them to follow all traffic signals and use the crosswalks, many of which have crossing guards to keep our students safe.”
