A new Woodman’s grocery store could be on the horizon for Grafton.
The Village of Grafton has not yet received any formal proposals, but Community Development Director Gabe Gilbertson said the village has heard from Woodman’s about the grocery chain’s interest in a 34-acre piece of land between North Port Washington Road and Interstate 43, south of Arrowhead Road and north of Costco and another vacant site.
In April, the DNR approved permitting for around 2 acres of wetlands at the site for the applicant “Woodman’s Grafton.”
Woodman’s is an employee-owned supermarket chain founded in 1919 in Janesville. There are 14 locations across Wisconsin and six in Illinois.
Gilbertson said it’s possible the village will see an application from Woodman’s by the end of 2026.
The site is currently owned by Tillmann Family Trust et al., according to Ozaukee County records. It currently consists of fallow agricultural fields, wetlands, the Port Washington Road right-of-way and a partially disturbed construction site, per the DNR records.
It lies in the Town of Grafton, and the developer has been informed that an application for annexation would be needed as part of any proposal, Gilbertson said.
“I think it would be a fantastic addition to the Port Washington corridor and a great use of one of the remaining large vacant commercial properties available in that area,” he said.
“Should Woodman’s move forward, we look forward to working with them and providing another grocer option for the residents of Grafton,” Gilbertson said.
