72-year-old Appleton woman dies after April 9 crash, police say

A 72-year-old Appleton woman died two weeks after she was injured in an April 9 crash when a man didn’t stop at a red light, the Appleton Police Department said April 30. Police identified her as Margaret Hopfensperger.

Law enforcement responded to the two-vehicle crash around 6:50 a.m. April 9. Based on the police investigation, a 17-year-old man had alcohol in his system when he didn’t stop at a red traffic signal and crashed into Hopfensperger’s vehicle at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Meade Street.

Police found one vehicle overturned and the other in a parking lot off the road.

Hopfensperger’s husband was driving and remains hospitalized, the police department said April 30. Hopfensperger died April 24 from her injuries.

The 17-year-old has “extensive injuries” and is receiving “specialized ongoing medical care” and has not yet been jailed. Police are recommending charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, homicide by use of a vehicle with prohibited alcohol content, and injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle causing great bodily harm.

The crash remains under investigation.
