Winter weather is heading to the Borderland, and while there’s a chance for a small amount of snow (less than half of an inch over several days), El Pasoans could see more rain or a wintry mix.
The colder weather begins to move in on Friday, Jan. 23, with temperatures dropping into the 30s in El Paso and a 90% chance of rain, according to the National Weather Service. While the forecast doesn’t anticipate much snow, El Paso has a 20% chance of less than half an inch of snow from Friday through Sunday, though parts of Southern New Mexico could see heavy snowfall, especially in the mountain areas.
Cloudcroft, New Mexico, could receive the most snow in the region with up to 10 inches, the National Weather Service said. Alamogordo and Truth or Consequences are expected to see one inch or less of snowfall.
El Pasoans may wake up to a wintry mix on Saturday, Jan. 24. A wintry mix is a weather term used when more than one type of frozen precipitation occurs at the same time, or within a small timeframe, according to The Weather Channel. Instead of just snow, sleet or freezing rain, you might see a combination.

Temperatures will also dip near freezing on Saturday, but may drop into the 20s by Sunday, Jan. 25. While temperatures are expected to stay cool, the weather will be dry early next week behind the storm system, according to the National Weather Service.
