Josh Pate has become one of the most influential voices in college football, and whenever he weighs in, fans across the country tend to listen and debate. On Tuesday, he released his updated Top 10 SEC Quarterback Rankings, and according to Pate, Marcel Reed still has work to do.
If there’s one thing Pate consistently praises about Texas A&M, it’s head coach Mike Elko. He believes Elko is the coach capable of elevating the Aggies into a regular national contender. When it comes to the quarterback position, Pate genuinely likes Reed’s talent and upside, but he doesn’t fully trust his consistency. In fact, Pate said Reed was the hardest player on the entire list to rank.
Looking strictly at the way Reed closed the 2026 season, it’s hard to argue with Pate’s hesitation. Reed didn’t look like a top‑five SEC quarterback in the final stretch, and the performances against Texas and Miami linger in the minds of many evaluators, including Pate.
But when you zoom out and evaluate Reed’s full body of work, the picture changes. For most of the season, Reed was one of the best quarterbacks in college football, keeping A&M in the national conversation and spending months inside the Heisman discussion. Still, we live in a “what have you done for me lately” world, and the late‑season struggles are what stuck with Pate.
As a result, Marcel Reed landed at No. 8 in Pate’s SEC quarterback rankings.
