What is a council removal hearing? Here's a video breakdown.

The Corpus Christi City Council has likely only had two removal hearings in the history of the city, both in the 1980s.

As the council weighs whether to move forward with a requested removal hearing for Mayor Paulette Guajardo, the two prior proceedings may serve as guideposts.

Both of those hearings, like the one requested for the current mayor, were started by petitions signed by at least five registered voters.

The process is similar to a trial in court — it includes witness testimony, the right to be heard and articles of impeachment, for example — but the judge and jury in a removal hearing is the City Council, absent the member facing the hearing.

Here’s a short video explainer breaking down the process.
