The high school volleyball season is nearly a month old, making for an opportune time to revisit the TRN Top 10 rankings.
The TRN Top 10 is subjective and represents a team’s relevance in its district and regional playoff bracket. However, unlike the football version, head-to-head matchups may be weighted more since it’s not uncommon for teams in lower classifications to beat those above them.
But if a team in a larger classification doesn’t project as well in its district or region, then an opponent it may have a win against could be ranked higher. Record and previous ranking is in parenthesis.
1. Holliday (12-6, 1) – The Lady Eagles maintain the top spot in these rankings thanks to strong results against a challenging schedule. They just finished third in Nocona’s Buckle up for Lane’s Sake Tournament, and most of their losses have come against higher classification programs.
2. Memorial (19-4, 5) – The Mavericks won their first 17 matches of the season before losing four of their last six but against quality competition like Decatur, Eaton and Stephenville. But the fact Holliday just beat Stephenville, 2-0, in Nocona last weekend is why Memorial is in second.
Holliday and Memorial meet Friday at Memorial.
3. Graham (20-5, 6) – The Lady Blues have impressed in each tournament they’ve played, including a 5-2 record in the Denver City Tournament last weekend. Graham can prove it’s worthy of this ranking in its next three matches against Iowa Park, Legacy and Memorial.
4. Windthorst (17-8, 3) – The Trojanettes remain competitive against strong competition in higher classifications while picking up impressive wins along the way. The expectation for this program is always high, and this group of Trojanettes is a regional threat.
5. Nocona (17-9, 4) – Nocona still feels a step behind Windthorst, but there’s no doubting the Lady Indians’ ability to supplant the Trojanettes atop District 8-2A. Nocona is at least a threat in a stout region.
6. Legacy (8-19, NR) – The record is deceiving. Legacy has played a stout schedule, including tournament appearances against good DFW and Panhandle programs. There’s also a win against Iowa Park on the Lady Leopards’ record, and if the Lady Hawks are in these rankings it’s difficult to keep Legacy out given the strength of schedule.
7. Iowa Park (16-8, 9) – The Lady Hawks still lack the consistency to put higher in these rankings, but they still look like the biggest threat to Holliday in District 7-3A.
8. Saint Jo (11-10, 8) – Saint Jo may be the best Class A team in the area despite a record just better than .500. The Lady Panthers have played more teams in higher classifications than other Class A options.
9. Christ Academy (10-7, 2) – The Lady Warriors don’t have a great win on their ledger, but these rankings acknowledge how a team ranks in its district and classification. And until a TAPPS Class A program proves it can unseat Christ Academy, it’s assumed they will continue to rule it.
10. Perrin-Whitt (19-6, NR) – The Lady Pirates are actually ranked fourth in Class A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, but the strength of schedule doesn’t profile that well. For one, Saint Jo has beaten Perrin-Whitt twice. We want more evidence from the Lady Pirates before moving them higher.
