University police investigate stalking, domestic violence at WT

Police at West Texas A&M University are investigating multiple reports of stalking and domestic violence on and off campus in Canyon that have taken place over the past couple of months.

On Thursday, April 23, the University Police Department (UPD) received a report of stalking incidents and domestic violence occurring both in an on-campus parking lot and off-campus during the month of April.

Additionally, on Wednesday, April 22, UPD received a report of a physical assault that happened in the early hours of April 22 in a residential facility on campus. Crime victim rights and options were provided, and the Title IX office was notified.

On April 16, UPD received a report of harassment and stalking incidents occurring both on and off campus and in student housing at various times since March. Crime victim rights and options were provided in that incident.

Those seeking help can make use of on-campus resources including Student Counseling, Student Medical, Title IX, and UPD.

Police said a few signs of an abusive relationship or stalking include physical, emotional and/or verbal abuse; someone looking at you or acting in ways that scare you; and someone making unwanted phone calls, texts, or social media posts.

Bystanders play a critical role by intervening, speaking up, or doing something about it. Police advise people to believe someone who discloses in confidence any details of a possible sexual assault, abusive behavior, or experience with stalking, and to watch out for friends and fellow students or employees who look like they could be in trouble or need help.
