A Tyler man died and another driver was injured early Monday, Sept. 1 after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 40 in Gray County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Troopers said the crash happened around 1:17 a.m. about two miles east of McLean. A 1991 Jeep Cherokee driven by Stephan Taylor, 43, was traveling east in the westbound lanes when it collided head-on with a 2021 International truck tractor towing a semi-trailer.
Taylor, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, and his vehicle caught fire on impact, DPS said.
The truck driver was taken to Shamrock General Hospital with minor injuries and later released.
The posted speed limit on the highway was 75 mph at the time of the crash. Road conditions were dry and the weather was clear, DPS said.
Authorities have not said why Taylor was driving the wrong way, and the Texas Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
