Texas Tech police share new details in crash that killed Cisco student

Texas Tech University police on Wednesday released new details about a deadly two-vehicle crash that left a 22-year-old student from Cisco dead earlier this month on the campus in central Lubbock.

Tech police officers responded about 9 p.m. April 4 to a crash involving a Kia Rio and a Ford F-150 near the intersection of Texas Tech Parkway and Indiana Avenue.

Responding officers found 22-year-old Jordyn Dabelstein, of Cisco, in the Kia Rio suffering life-threatening injuries.

She was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center, where she died about three days later.

Meanwhile the driver of the F-150, 81-year-old Jimmy Boyett of Lubbock, and his passenger, an 81-year-old woman, suffered minor injury and were also taken to UMC.

An initial investigation indicates Dabelstein was stopped at a traffic signal, facing northbound, when it was rear-ended by the Ford F-150 traveling at what was described as a high rate of speed, according to a Tech news release.

The impact pushed the Rio through the intersection into the 3400 block of Texas Tech Parkway.

According to a crash report, Boyett’s passenger reportedly told officers that he might have “blacked out,” and was unable to lift his foot off the accelerator as they approached the intersection.

No arrests have been made and the crash remains under investigation, the release states.

Meanwhile, family members have set up a GoFundMe online fundraiser to help with Dabelstein’s funeral expenses.

The junior at Texas Tech was studying to be a registered nurse and was described as “the sweetest, kindest, girl who loved nothing more than her family and her animals,”  according to the page.
