What was once known as Jones AT&T Stadium, the home of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, has been a tough place for road teams to come visit. Now, with July’s partnership announcement, the goal shifts to becoming the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Texas Tech enters the 2026 season looking to reinforce that coming to Lubbock is the toughest trip in the Big 12. The Red Raiders are currently riding an eight-game winning streak inside Galaxy Stadium. That home winning streak is tied with the Ohio State Buckeyes for the fourth-longest active streak, with only the Indiana Hoosiers (15), Ole Miss Rebels (12), and Texas Longhorns (9) having longer streaks. The streak started back on Nov 30, 2024, with a 52-15 victory over West Virginia Mountaineers.
Last year, the streak was powered by a run that concluded with a Big 12 championship and a College Football Playoff appearance. A major part of that run has been a record-setting home crowd, with Texas Tech averaging over 60,000 fans per game, a school record. The attendance record leaves no doubt about the support this program has behind it currently.
Favorable schedule
The 2026 schedule is teed up nicely for the streak to continue. Texas Tech opens the season at home on Sept. 5 against Abilene Christian. Barring a catastrophe, the Red Raiders will notch win No. 9 right out of the gate.
From there, the slate features seven more home games. The Big 12 opener is week three against Houston on Sept. 19. The non-conference schedule wraps up with Sam Houston State on Sept. 26.
While Houston likely will be the toughest opponent the Red Raiders face all season, the marquee home test comes when Arizona State visits. This pits the conference’s two most recent Big 12 champions against each other in what is one of the most anticipated games of the season.
The Sun Devils handed the Red Raiders their only regular-season loss in 2025. The 2024 matchup was a fun 30-22 showdown going the way of Texas Tech. Expect Kenny Dillingham’s squad to give Joey McGuire’s team its best shot in October.
Arizona and West Virginia also make trips to Lubbock later in the year, rounding out a home slate that gives Texas Tech favorable chances to reach a 15-game home winning streak.
Homefield advantage has been a defining factor in Texas Tech’s rise. McGuire is 22-5 in the friendly confines of Galaxy Stadium since taking over the program in 2022. With the crowd noise and often the West Texas wind all working in the Red Raiders’ favor, opposing offenses have struggled to find rhythm in Lubbock. The roster reloaded even with the departure of so many key contributors who are now on NFL rosters.
If Texas Tech can remain undefeated at home in 2026 and push the winning streak to 15, it would be a significant marker for a program that’s still writing the story of its current golden era. That would all but likely be a key indicator that Texas Tech can anticipate hosting a playoff game.
