Texas Senate primary heats up: Talarico launches tour, Cornyn touts Trump ties

As early voting for the Super Tuesday primary gets underway, state Rep. James Talarico is taking his campaign on the road.

Talarico, D-Austin, announced his “Take Back Texas Tour,” a 12-city barnstorm leading up to Election Day, in a news release Monday, Feb. 16.

“This is a grassroots movement to take power back for working people in a system rigged by billionaire mega-donors and corrupt politicians – because the real fight in this country is not left vs right, it’s top vs bottom,” said Talarico. “We’re hitting the road – going everywhere and talking to everyone. We’re not writing off any voter or any community. That’s the only way to take back Texas.”

The tour marks the final push in Talarico’s campaign, which is fighting a fierce battle against U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas, to win the Democratic U.S. Senate primary in Texas. The winner will face the winner of the Republican primary in the November General Election.

Here are the dates and locations of Talarico’s upcoming tour stops across Texas:

Cornyn touts Trump connection, urges early voting

For incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, the last two weeks of the campaign mark his last opportunity to close the gap between him and Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is still celebrating new polling showing him leading the Republican primary pack.

As has been the case throughout the campaign, Cornyn sought to tie himself to President Donald Trump, though the president has so far declined to back a candidate in the race.

“Today is the first day of early voting in Texas,” his campaign wrote in a news release. “The reasons to vote for Senator John Cornyn are virtually endless. He’s voted with President Trump 99% of the time, fought to confirm Trump-appointed justices, including Brett Kavanaugh, and has led in the Senate to help secure the border, cut taxes, and put Texas first.”

“Texas needs pro-Trump conservative leadership in Washington, and Senator John Cornyn has delivered exactly that,” the news release continued. “Early voting is open now. Don’t wait.”
