Texas Football LB Trey Moore named Campbell Trophy semifinalist

Over the last few years, Trey Moore has become a staple on the Longhorns’ defense. While he has made a difference on the gridiron, he has also made an impact off the field. On Wednesday, he was rewarded for his efforts when he was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy. The Trophy recognizes a player for their combined academic success, football performance, and exemplary leadership.

In the past, Texas has had success with the Campbell Award. Last season, Jake Majors was selected as a finalist. The last Longhorns who took home the award were Dallas Griffin (2007) and defensive end Sam Acho (2010). Moore hopes to make history and become the third player in program history on that list.

For head coach Steve Sarkisian, the news that Moore could be adding to his trophy case came as no surprise.

“Trey checks all the boxes of a tremendous student and athlete and is an absolute joy to coach,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said. “He has a huge impact on the field, is an outstanding leader on and off the field, and with the example he sets in his commitment to his schoolwork,” Sarkisian told Texas Athletics.

As Moore has made an impact in the community, he has helped the Longhorns’ defense get off to an impressive start. In four games, the Texas native has recorded 12 total tackles and added one fumble recovery to his resume. He also has one tackle for a loss and is on pace to match his numbers from last year.

While Moore’s goal is to bring a national title to Austin, he will also be watching how the Campbell Award plays out. The finalists will be announced on Oct. 22, and each finalist will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. On Dec.9, the finalists will travel to Vegas, where the winner will be announced.
