Texas authorities have identified one person who was killed and another who was injured in a three-vehicle crash late Thursday afternoon on Interstate 40 in Amarillo.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash that was reported about 4 p.m. Aug. 13 on I-40 near Arnot Road, according to a news release from the DPS.
Investigators believe 48-year-old Jimmy Diaz of Amarillo was driving a 2022 Mack Truck-Tractor west on I-40 when, for unknown reasons, the truck traveled into the center median, through the cable barrier and into the eastbound lanes. The Mack truck collided with an eastbound 1999 Ford F-250 pickup driven by 76-year-old Jimmy Broyles of Logan, New Mexico, sending the Ford into an eastbound 2020 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 24-year-old Evelyn Karina Rangel-Gonzalez of Harlingen.
The Mack truck continued across the frontage road and into an open field. The F-250 rolled and came to rest in the center median while the Malibu skidded into the center median.
Broyles was pronounced dead at the scene. Rangel-Gonzalez suffered minor injuries and was taken to BSA Hospital in Amarillo.
All three people were wearing seatbelts.
Road conditions were listed as dry with clear weather. Other factors contributing to the crash were not immediately available as the investigation is ongoing.
