Linemen from 61 high school football teams converged on Hardin-Simmons University June 21 for the State Lineman Challenge. More than 700 athletes competed in events testing strength, agility and teamwork.
A few events appeared easier than they actually were. The Worm was like that, a 10-foot duffel bag filled with sand. Squads had to work together to carry it down the field, around a cone and back.
Each team had to first work out how they would carry it, and then ensure they didn’t trip over each other’s feet as the sand in the bag shifted. More than one group lost its footing halfway through the course, pulling the whole group down.
HSU coach Jesse Burleson invited high school lineman to attend their Big Bodies Lineman Camp July 12 for players entering ninth through 12th grade this fall. More information can be found at the HSU website.
