Preseason rankings, polls high on Texas Tech basketball's chances in 2025-26

Preseason polls are coming in fast and the majority of them see big things out of the Texas Tech basketball team in the 2025-26 season.

The Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll was released Monday and the Red Raiders came in at No. 10 in the nation. Texas Tech came in eighth in the final AP Top 25 and Coaches Polls for the 2024-25 season after Grant McCasland’s team came up just short of a Final Four berth, falling to eventual national champion Florida in the Elite Eight.

Houston came in at No. 2 and BYU No. 9 in the preseason AP Poll with Arizona landing at No. 13, Iowa State at No. 16 and Kansas at No. 19 to round things out for the Big 12.

Jeff Borzello released ESPN’s preseason Top 25 last week and the list sees the Red Raiders coming in 11th in the nation. The full ranking sees fellow Big 12 teams Houston (third), BYU (seventh), Arizona (13th), Iowa State (15th) and Kansas (22nd) among the 25 teams. Also ranked are Texas Tech’s non-conference opponents Duke (10th), Arkansas (12th) and Illinois (16th) plus top-ranked Purdue, who the Red Raiders could see in the Bahamas in November.

Over the last week, the top three advanced analytic websites for college basketball have also revealed their preseason rankings.

KenPom has Texas Tech 12th in the nation, expected to have the 12th-best offensive rating and 18th-best defensive rating in the country. Other sites are less optimistic about the Red Raiders. Bart Torvik rated Texas Tech 28th in the country, including 25th in offense and 34th in defense. Meanwhile, Evan Miya has the Red Raiders 21st in the country.

Gary Parrish at CBS Sports updated his Top 25 and 1 rankings throughout the summer, the last update coming on June 2. He has Texas Tech ranked 7th in the country.
