Pleasant Valley group gets $13.6K grant for planned River Road mural

Pleasant Valley / River Road Revitalization Group, Inc. has been awarded their first Grant from WT Civic Experiment in the amount of $13,600 for the Pleasant Valley Mural Initiative. The grant was administered in a partnership with Amarillo Area Foundation.

“We’ve already talked to several artists and still have a few more to interview,” spokesperson Hope McCoy said.

“We would like to form a mural community committee to help us envision the mural,” she said. “The mural will go on a 300-foot fenceline at 4600 River Rd. On May 14, we will be having a community meeting at 6 p.m., at a location to be announced.”

Any citizen who has ever lived in Pleasant Valley, currently lives in the Pleasant Valley or River Road neighborhood, or owns property or a business there, is welcome to come and attend the meeting to give their input.

“Also, during this meeting on May 14, we will be having a grassroots board election to meet various requirements. The positions to be voted on this year will be vice president, secretary, and an at-large-member,” McCoy said.

The PVRRRG is finishing the last step to turn in the application to the City of Amarillo Neighborhood Oversight Committee to become the next Recognized Neighborhood Association.

They recently had a successful “Flatter than a pancake” breakfast, which raised $1,897 which, combined with the grant, brought a total $15,947 for the mural toward its $30,000 goal, along with a raised sidewalk in front of it. Also, they held another Clean Up Day event in mid-April that was a success.

The group wants to encourage anyone 18 and older to volunteer. Volunteering is helpful on applications and resumes, along with bringing new, fresh ideas.
