Saturday’s Peach Fest will transport attendees to a world where children can run around with peaches larger than their face and others can try peach-infused cold brew or a traditional cobbler.
Morgan Guffey said that is the vision for Idalou Harvest Co.’s free-to-attend festival at 12206 US 62 E. from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Guffey’s hope is to make it a place where individuals can learn what is possible for crops when they grow during their designated season, and the difference in taste that comes with freshly picked fruits.
Hosted by Mo’s Productions and Juicy Lucy Vegetables, the Peach Fest will host around 50 vendors, each with peach-themed menus and products, including peach barbecue sauce or peach salsas.
“Part of this is educating people and giving them a glimpse into what it takes to grow their food,” Guffey said. “I think that’s important, but I kind of think we forget to do that because we have things so readily available.”
In addition to live music, Guffey said there will be an orchard ride and food tents throughout the day. Peaches will also be on sale to take home.
Rhonda Taylor, with Idalou Harvest Co., said they accept WIC and Lone Star cards. Special to Saturday, anyone who purchases with a food stamp card will receive five times the original credit, rather than the traditional doubled credit.
“If you spend $30 on your Lone Star card, we would normally give you another $30 to spend on fruits and vegetables,” Taylor said. “On Saturday, for the Peach Fest, it’s going to be five times that amount, and they will get $150 worth of coupons.”
Idalou Harvest Co. is one of the largest distributors in West Texas, Guffey said, with thousands of peaches on their land.
Taylor said the mass amounts of peaches the orchard has is one of the reasons they decided to host the festival, but she hopes participants will notice the other fruits and vegetables available, too.
“We have peach trees, and plum trees and pear trees — everything you can think of,” Taylor said. “We’re also here year-round.”
The Peach Fest is one of many festivals the orchard will host this year. Taylor said Idalou Harvest Co. is open every Saturday to buy fresh produce.
