Editor’s Note: The El Paso Times continues its 2026 high school football countdown with No. 16 Ysleta. Practice began Aug. 3 for teams that did not have spring practice and began on Aug. 10 for teams that did have spring practice. The opening weekend for games is Aug. 27-28.
Outlook for 2026 season
Ysleta has high expectations for the 2026 season after a strong 2025 season. The Indians should be powerful on offense with a talented group of skill players and a solid offensive line.
Ysleta is in a strong District 1-4A, Division 1, with Austin, Riverside, and Andress, and the keys to another district title will hinge on consistent offense, winning the turnover margin, and staying healthy, as depth may be an issue.
A look back at 2025
The Indians went 10-1 overall and were undefeated in the regular season, winning the District 1-4A title with wins over Riverside, Austin, Clint, and Irvin. The Indians also had quality non-district victories vs. Parkland and Socorro.
How the offense shapes up
The Indians are in good hands on offense with veteran Rodrigo Martinez leading the way. Martinez passed for more than 2,300 yards in 2025 and threw 33 touchdown passes.
Receivers Richard Thomas and Silas Thomas (cousins) will be among the top targets for Martinez.
The offensive line will be led by Angelo Nájera and Carlos Nevárez.
How the defense shapes up
Linebackers Ruben Juardo and DJ Escarsega will be leaders, along with defensive backs Ramiro Corona and Sebastian Medina. The team will also lean on defensive tackle Mateo Villarreal to lead on the charge up front.

“We’ve got a strong veteran group back and they are excited to be back and work hard to have another big season,” Martinez said. “We have a good group of leaders.”

“It felt great to win. Last year, we learned a lot,” said Rodrigo Martinez, who is not related to the head coach. “I’m seeing lots of effort and focus as we head into the season.”
Added Thomas: “We have come a long way and last year was a great achievement for us. But that’s in the past, we have used last year to help push us forward.”
Added Jurado: “Our district has good teams. We have worked hard for this upcoming season and have a good team bond.”
