Grammy award-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artists Santana and The Doobie Brothers brought their Oneness Tour to the Don Haskins Center Aug. 16.
Santana, whose sound is almost instantly recognizable, brought his hits spanning more than five decades to the stage. His guitar, message, and music speak a language of rhythm and soul that unites audiences worldwide.
Enrique Lavin has been a Santana fan since his father introduced him to the musician when he was a kid. He went to the concert with his parents, and it was their first time seeing Santana perform live.
“I’m excited because it’s my first time seeing him. It’s going to be a cool experience,” Lavin said.
His father, also named Enrique Lavin, said in Spanish that he had been a Santana fan since he was 14 or 15 years old and was excited to finally see him perform.
Trent McCoy of Albuquerque went to the concert with his son, also named Trent McCoy. The older McCoy introduced his son to Santana’s music, and they have seen Santana perform three times.
McCoy said he has been a fan for 40 to 50 years. Both were excited to see The Doobie Brothers and Santana.
“It’s almost spiritual to see Santana,” the older McCoy said.
“Like he said, it’s almost spiritual. He’s like a shaman with how he plays guitar. It’s otherworldly,” the younger McCoy said. “Every time we see him, it’s just a magical experience.”
The father and son have traveled around the Southwest to attend concerts they both enjoy, including an AC/DC concert in Denver.
Critically acclaimed rock icons The Doobie Brothers also brought their rich legacy of roots-based, rock and roll. The legendary hitmakers Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, John McFee, and Michael McDonald performed hits fans know and love as well as new music from their highly acclaimed new album, Walk This Road.
Santana and The Doobie Brothers share a history of touring together, most notably in 2019, when The Doobie Brothers supported Santana on the Supernatural Now tour.
