How to spot signs of human trafficking in your area | Opinion

We often think of public service as being a police officer or a teacher, but it can also be performing a general service to the public. In other words, we all can contribute something to the world around us, and public service is incredibly important to making our country a better place.

One notable area in which we all can contribute to the community is looking out for the signs of human trafficking. Smaller communities tend to brush off trafficking as an international issue, but, unfortunately, it occurs everywhere. Now more than ever, it is critical that people become equipped to do something about it.

One of the most visible signs to look out for in victims of human trafficking is tattoos that might indicate a kind of “ownership” that a trafficker has over the victim. However, some signs cannot be detected upon first glance. If you are interested in more details for identifying a potential victim, check out Polaris Project, as they provide training on lesser-known signs.

What can you do if you suspect someone is being trafficked? You can call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888, notify local authorities or ask the potential victim if they are in danger. Some victims are unaware that they are a victim of human trafficking and may be hesitant to receive help.

However, local professionals can assist these individuals. There is hope for victims, and you can be a part of their freedom story by serving the public and being a vigilant citizen.
