Texas Tech basketball’s Grant McCasland is among the highest-paid coaches in the country.
According to the updated USA TODAY Sports head coach salary database, McCasland was the 15th-highest-paid coach in the country for the 2025-26 season. McCasland’s contract called for him to make $5 million, before bonuses, which puts him fifth among other coaches in the Big 12 Conference.
Bill Self tops the overall list as the Kansas head coach made over $8.8 million this past season. Houston’s Kelvin Sampson and Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd each snagged $5.5 million while Baylor’s Scott Drew was just behind at $5,474,290.
McCasland earned $100,000 in bonuses for making the NCAA Tournament and advancing to the second round. He earned another $10,000 for being ranked in the final national rankings, putting his total for the 2025-26 season at $5,110,000.

McCasland completed the first year of his restructured contract that was signed last summer. The current deal runs through the 2030-31 season, giving McCasland five more years on his contract.
The contract calls for McCasland to earn raises of $100,000 per year throughout the life of the deal. His salary for the 2026-27 season is slated to be $5.1 million and top out at $5.5 million in 2030-31.
What’s Grant McCasland’s contract buyout?
McCasland’s contract has a clause that stipulates the coach must repay 60% of his remaining contract salary if he takes a position at a school in the state of Texas. That number is 40% is he takes a job outside of the state of Texas.
Should McCasland be fired without cause by the university, McCasland is owed 70% of the remaining value of his contract.
