On the first play of the Grape Creek High School football team’s bi-district game against Crane, Eagles running back Darrell West cut back on a sweep play and scored on a 56-yard touchdown run.
After West’s touchdown run, Grape Creek coach Tanner Thiel said that moment was when he knew they were going to win.

Thiel’s intuition was spot on. The Eagles ran away with a 50-15 bi-district championship over Crane at James H. Bird Memorial Stadium on Friday, the first postseason win for a program that began in 1998.
“It’s indescribable,” Thiel said. “I’ve thought about this moment and what I would say, and it’s hard to even put it into words. I’m most excited for Grape Creek; I’m excited for the community, I’m excited for the school, I’m excited for the players and the administration. This is 27 years in the making.”
Those around the West Texas and San Angelo area are aware of Grape Creek’s struggles to win on the gridiron. From 1999-2001, they went without a win, racking up a losing streak of 38 games, and did not see the playoffs until 2014.
Thiel is very cognizant of the program’s reputation as the longest-tenured athletic director and football coach in Grape Creek’s history. He experienced his fair share of ups and downs, from the highs of the program’s first district championship share in 2021 to the following winless season in 2022.
With growing participation over the past two years, they started winning. From eighth grade up to varsity football, each team had a winning record in 2025.
“They’re getting used to winning ball games,” Thiel said, “and so now our expectation is not going into a ball game and hope to keep it close. It’s our kids going to a ball game expecting to win.”
Grape Creek didn’t just win its first bi-district title this season — it posted a program-high 7–4 record, powered by West’s return to the team after missing his junior year. It made his opening-play touchdown feel almost poetic.
West has been the engine of the Eagles’ attack, piling up 1,610 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns on 134 carries.
To him, though, none of it is poetry. It’s simply football.
“I knew we had to come out here and play – first snap of the game, I saw the hole, cut and just went to go score,” West said. “… I worked hard to get back to the team, and now I get to celebrate with all my brothers, just having a great time doing what we are doing.”
Simple football and clean execution are the foundation of Grape Creek’s Slot-T offense. While most programs in Texas have transitioned to modern spread schemes, Thiel long believed his team could succeed by sticking to its identity.
And now, they’re winning trophies because of it.
Forming that identity extended to the other side of the ball. Before the 2025 season, first-year defensive coordinator Collin Barnes set an ambitious goal – he wanted his unit to be the best defense in the district. His confidence, lofty as it was, instilled pride in the Eagles this season, and it showed against Crane.
Facing a Golden Cranes team averaging 29.9 points per game, Grape Creek forced three turnovers, including a fumble returned for a touchdown by Jonathan Martin – the turning point of the game.
“The goal has always been to put a defense on the field that we can be proud of and that fits our style,” Barnes said. “These kids, I can’t say enough about it. These kids are tough; they have tons of heart, and that’s what we build our defense around. And on a night like tonight, where we get to show that to the people, especially on a big stage like in the playoffs, that’s all you can ask for.”
The Eagles are unapologetically themselves, and while some outsiders may look down upon that, Thiel now has tangible evidence to validate his methods.
“Honestly, words can’t describe how much (Thiel) means to myself, all the coaches, all the kids and the community,” Barnes said. “Make no mistake, Tanner Thiel is Grape Creek football. That’s what it is, and he’s been able to deliver.”
The Eagles have another shot at history next week when they will compete against Idalou in the second round at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Wolf Stadium in Colorado City.
