No. 15 Texas A&M fell 3–2 to top‑ranked Texas on Saturday, dropping their first SEC series of the season and moving to 5–3 in conference play. The Aggies were far sharper in the circle, with sophomore right‑hander Sydney Lessentine going the distance, allowing just six hits across six innings. But a solo home run in the bottom of the third proved to be the difference as the Longhorns held on.
Offensively, it was a frustrating afternoon for an A&M lineup that has been producing at a high clip over the last several weeks. For the second straight game, the Aggies out‑hit Texas, this time 8–6, but couldn’t convert enough opportunities to push runs across.
Base running miscues didn’t help, as A&M was picked off at third and caught stealing twice, giving away three avoidable outs. It’s part of the Aggies’ trademark aggressive style, but against an All‑American catcher, the margin for error shrinks.
A&M struck first in the top of the opening frame, with Tallen Edwards driving in Mya Perez on a sacrifice fly. Texas answered immediately with two runs in the bottom half to take the lead. After a scoreless second, the Aggies tied it in the third on an RBI single from Michaela Wark, scoring Ariel Kowalewski.
But in the bottom of the inning, Texas catcher Reese Atwood launched a solo home run, her second of the series, to put the Longhorns ahead 3–2. It would stand as the game‑winner.
From there, both teams settled into a defensive and pitching battle. Lessentine kept the Aggies within striking distance, but the offense couldn’t break through, going scoreless over the final four innings as Texas secured the first softball edition of the Lone Star Showdown.
