The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most popular teams in professional sports, and being as such, they tend to have a lot of celebrity fans. One of those who roots for the Cowboys is Scottie Scheffler, currently ranked as the No. 1 golfer in the world.
Part of being a fan of America’s Team is having thick skin; Cowboys haters love to poke fun at the team and those who are emotionally invested in it. It’s even harder to escape being heckled when you’re a Cowboys fan in Pennsylvania, where that hatred runs even deeper for Philadelphia Eagles fanatics.
Unfortunately for Scheffler, those two things collided at the PGA Championship, which is being played at Aronimink Golf Club, in Newton Square, Pennsylvania this week. During his first round of play, Eagles fans in the crowd didn’t miss their chance at heckling Scheffler.
There’s an etiquette to golf and yelling at a player is normally frowned upon. However, when it’s Eagles fans yelling at a Cowboys fan, all is forgiven. Eagles fans are notorious for being rude, obnoxious, and nasty, but this was playful banter that Scheffler was able to laugh off.
The group was even able to keep the jokes light and relevant, mentioning the Thanksgiving matchup between the teams this season as the schedule was released on Thursday.
Scheffler was born in New Jersey, which has plenty of Eagles fans, especially in South Jersey, but was a Texas Longhorn in college and now resides in Dallas. It’s well known that Scheffler is a Cowboys fan, something the crowd at the PGA Championship clearly knew.
This was all in good fun, but Scheffler’s lucky the batteries didn’t come out.
