District play begins for local Class 5A schools this week, and for a majority of other teams it’s the final tune-up. Here’s a look at the best high school football games in the Lubbock area in Week 5.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Shallowater (2-2) at Idalou (2-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Reddell Field
This rivalry rarely disappoints.
The Mustangs have had Idalou’s number the past three years since the matchup was renewed. That includes Shallowater’s 24-20 victory last season. The Wildcats’ last win in the series was in 2019.
Idalou enters as the hotter team. The Wildcats rebounded the past two weeks after a rough start to the season. Since being outscored 99-34 its first two games, Idalou has won consecutive contests, including a 50-0 blowout of Odessa Compass last week. That marked the Cougars’ first loss.
Shallowater has been up and down, but it’s played the tougher schedule. Three of the Mustangs’ four opponents have been in Class 4A, including Midland Greenwood last week. The Rangers, 42-17 winners Friday, are ranked No. 9 in 4A D-II.
As usual, fans should prepare for a competitive, defensive-minded matchup this week at Reddell Field.

Last week: Monterey 49, Odessa High 21; Amarillo Palo Duro 35, Amarillo 14

The Matadors are aiming for consecutive wins for the first time this season.
Roscoe (0-4) at New Home (3-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Leopard Field
Last week: Stamford 28, Roscoe 7; New Home 48, Denver City 14
The Leopards seem to have found themselves since a Week 1 setback. Don’t be fooled by the Plowboys’ record, though. Roscoe’s average margin of defeat is 16 points to Hawley, Stamford and two undefeated teams.
